As jet setters, we have all faced the challenge of packing efficiently – the desire to carry less while ensuring we have stylish and functional outfits for every occasion. The concept of a capsule wardrobe is a game-changer. It allows you to pack lighter without sacrificing style or versatility. Curating a capsule wardrobe will streamline your packing process and elevates your travel experience. Who wants to lug a 60-inch suitcase all over Europe in the middle of summer anyway?
Creating a capsule wardrobe for a carry-on trip involves selecting a versatile mix of clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits for your journey. It takes practice to perfectly assemble a compact yet chic selection of clothing that seamlessly adapts to different environments. Whether you are a seasoned minimalist or a packing enthusiast seeking fresh insights, this guide is your passport to traveling lighter with the help of a capsule wardrobe.
Here’s how to use a capsule wardrobe effectively when packing only a carry-on:
Choose a Color Scheme:
Select a color palette of 2-3 neutral colors (black, gray, navy, beige) and 2-3 accent colors that complement each other. Once you nail down your color scheme, you will be able to easily mix and match different pieces from your collection to create a variety of outfits from the basics.
Plan Around Core Pieces of Your Capsule Wardrobe:
Start with core pieces such as basic tops (t-shirts, blouses), bottoms (pants, skirts), and outerwear (jackets, sweaters). These items will form the foundation of your outfits in your capsule wardrobe.
Coordinate Tops and Bottoms:
Select tops that can be paired with multiple bottoms and vice versa. For example, a few neutral tops can be paired with different pants or skirts to create various looks.
Consider Layering:
Include layering pieces like cardigans or lightweight sweaters that can be added or removed based on the weather. These pieces will also help to create different outfit combinations. My favorite layer that you’ll always find in my carry-on is a jean jacket.
If you anticipate cold or rainy weather at your destination, pack a coat or jacket that is within your chosen color palette to ensure that the layer is versatile and will go with any outfit. Oftentimes these types of coats can be bulky, so consider wearing them while traveling to maximize your carry-on space.
Mix and Match Accessories:
Pack a few accessories (scarves, belts, sunnies, jewelry) that will transform your outfits. Accessories can significantly change the look of a simple outfit. In my capsule wardrobe, I have a lot of black and beige pieces, making leopard print accessories my go-to. I never go a day without wearing my Apple watch, so having a classy and neutral band as part of my lineup of accessories that match everything is essential for me. Also, think about your capsule wardrobe when you pick out your next pair of glasses, too!
Limit Shoes:
Opt for versatile shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits. A pair of comfortable walking shoes, sandals, and perhaps one dressier option (if necessary) is plenty. A pair of white sneakers has never failed me. I’m convinced that Air Force Ones will never go out of style. They are stylish, match everything in my capsule wardrobe, and are comfortable to walk many miles a day in. I leveled up and purchased these insoles for my last trip to Europe. They made a world of a difference and were a lifesaver when it came to walking 10+ miles a day – highly recommend them.
Choose Multi-Functional Items for Your Capsule Wardrobe:
Search for pieces to add to your capsule wardrobe that will serve multiple purposes and can be used to dress up or dress down. For instance, a beach cover-up can also be worn as a dress for a casual dinner. A blazer can serve as a jacket but will look stylish with jeans or dress pants. There’s only so much space in a carry-on, so multi-functional items will be a tremendous help in saving space for other essentials in your bag.
Plan for Different Occasions:
Include pieces that can transition from daytime sightseeing to evening outings. A versatile dress or casual pants can be dressed up or down. Tank tops a flexible pieces of clothing, as they can be worn with leggings, jeans, or a skirt. If it’s chilly, grab one of those layers to go with the outfit. It is so much more simplistic to travel with a capsule wardrobe that have you prepared for anything and everything that matches.
Pack Efficiently:
Roll your clothes to save space and minimize wrinkles. Packing cubes or compression bags will help maximize your carry-on’s capacity. For the longest time, I didn’t think I needed packing cubes. I finally caved in and bought some on Amazon Prime Day. I fell in love and will never pack another bag without using them again.
Stick to Essential Toiletries:
Minimize toiletries by packing travel-sized versions, and only pack what you realistically need. Consider the essentials like toothpaste, shampoo, and sunscreen, but skip items that can be purchased at your destination or will be available at your accommodation. I could fill an entire carry-on full of skincare, cosmetics, and hair products myself, so this is where I struggle the most when it comes to packing efficiently.
To help combat overpacking toiletries, I have found some tremendous travel-size products. Versatile cosmetics are my favorite. I have consistently purchased Tarte cheek palettes for years. With a highlighter, blush, AND bronzer all in one compact, you’ll save so much space. I also love the Morphe travel-size makeup brushes. They’re packable, yet still get the job done!
Prioritize Comfort With Your Capsule Wardrobe:
Fashionable doesn’t have to mean uncomfortable. Choose comfortable fabrics and clothing that fit well and make you feel good. Uncomfortable clothing can ruin your travel experience.
Reuse and Re-wear:
Don’t be afraid to re-wear outfits during your trip. Mix and match different pieces to create new looks from your capsule wardrobe.
The best-case scenario for packing light is booking accommodations with laundry access. I tend to stay in hotels more than Airbnb, but I do appreciate having the option of doing laundry to refresh my wardrobe when staying at an Airbnb!
The goal of a capsule wardrobe is to simplify your packing while ensuring you have enough options for various situations. I am constantly searching for new pieces for my collection. It can take some time to build up a perfect wardrobe, but it’s easy to start with the neutrals you already have! By planning your outfits around a well-curated selection of versatile clothing items, you can enjoy a stress-free and stylish travel experience with just a carry-on.
